During February and March, three local associations partnered with Parkinson’s UK to deliver a tenpin bowling collaboration pilot. Four weekly sessions were held consecutively, resulting in a highly successful programme delivered at Hollywood Bowl centres in Tunbridge Wells, Wigan and Crawley, as well as Bugsy’s in Margate.

Physical activity is known to be highly beneficial for people living with Parkinson’s, helping to enhance coordination, improve flexibility and balance, and increase overall strength. Social activities such as bowling also have a positive impact on mental wellbeing, strengthening relationships and encouraging social interaction.
This pilot demonstrated those benefits clearly. Feedback from participants, coaches and Parkinson’s UK staff was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting not only the physical advantages but also the enjoyment and sense of community created through the sessions. As a result, there is strong demand to continue the programme and explore opportunities to roll it out at additional centres across the country.
One Wigan coach commented:
“The trial was a tremendous success in our eyes. The participants very much enjoyed both the social interaction and friendliness that our sport promotes, as well as the slightly more technical and competitive side too.”
A Crawley coach added:
“The people involved are incredible. The bowlers, the coaches, the atmosphere – it’s something special.”
