Boys Singles
First up on Monday were the boys with the girls starting the Singles on Tuesday. Frank Stephenson and Louie Dawson started at 9am and an early 7am for the watching fans at home. Not a fantastic start for the fans though as power issues in the centre meant a couple of powercuts and no live streaming and scoring but thanks to our manager Chloe and coach Hadley, scores were relayed quickly for social media. A great start for both of our athletes in the first three games. Frank with 257,219 and 201 as Louie fired 200,228 and 198. The second half of the block also going well for both as Frank hit 204 and 257 as Louie had a dip to 159 but recovered well with 204. Frank ending with 203 for a great 1338 and Louie adding 209 for 1198.
With Frank leading the way, confidence was high in the second block, Charlie Upton firing 229 and could have been more and Liam Bailey looking settled early on with 224. A blip in game two for Charlie with 158 and then Liam with 171 then 183 for Charlie and 180 for Liam in the third game. Charlie back in the strikes then hit games of 258 and 213 as he chased a place in the top four. Liam struggling a little with 164 and 132. Good news though was the scoring pace overall was lower in the second squad and looking good for Frank Stephenson sat in pole position with a Dane chasing in squad two. At the end Charlie added 212 for a good opening 1253 and Liam ending with 169 and 1040. Frank into the second seed position going into the semi finals.
Boys Singles Finals
Frank in the second seed spot was up against the number three seed Nicolai Mallia from Malta and not an easy match in anyway shape or form. Both two handed, both left handed and both very talented youth bowlers in their respective countries. Malta though a small island, has big ambition in bowling and fast becoming a threat in youth championships. Frank up first with a nine spare which Nicolai matched, both then doubled and then spared and Frank the first to blink with an open frame. Two frames later Nicolai opened and Frank had started striking. On a run of five in a row he powered to the end to fire 235 to Nicolai Mallia’s 204.
The final would be against Denmark’s Sebastian Holm Holst and another lefthander be it one handed this time. A spare for both in the opening frame then an open from Sebastian opened a door which Frank was determined to close early and fired a turkey spare and strike as the Danish athlete struck then spared and doubled. Frank with a 20 pin lead in the sixth frame as both spared again. The Dane struck in the eighth frame as Frank spared and then doubled as Frank had to settle for another spare in the ninth frame. Still leading Frank needed to stay clean in the tenth frame. Nine spare each and Gold going to England’s Frank Stephenson 213-201 .

Tuesday was Girls Singles day and up first for Team England were Olivia McCarthy and Jasmine Snowball. A pretty good start overall in the first three games despite one or two hiccups. Olivia with an opening three of 181, 169 and 201 as Jasmine had an up and down 193, 126 and great recovery back to 193. Olivia was steaming along nicely with 215 and 210 and into third but Jasmine’s rollercoaster ride continued with 199 then 132. Not great news at the end as Olivia hit 143 to end with 1119 in 6th place and Jasmine up to 184 and 1027 and in 14th.
The Turkish afternoon saw Avan Rhodes and Chloe Birch on the lanes to complete the singles and Avan was flying in game one with 243 before a drop to 168 then back up to 186 as Chloe opened with 181 and up to 211 before falling back in game three to 160. Early on and Charlie off to a flying start with a turkey against the Czech Republic and Frank a spectator as the Dane opened with the front four. Bad news for the girls as Norway and Finalnd both opening with a turkey and our duo trailing in the first few frames of game 1. Charlie with a couple of spres still comfortably ahead butt Frank looked to be going a game down. Avan mounting a comeback with a double and Finland’s Emma Palermaa holding Chloe off. Frank losing the first game 189-228 but Charlie going one up easily 210-154. Norway were giving no room to Avan and Chloe also fighting hard being held by Finland. Then came an opening as Palermaa opened in the tenth and Chloe needing a double fired the first one but seven pin stopping a win and she went one down 199-194, Avan going one down 243-194.
Game two and much better for Frank and ahead for most of the game, Charlie all level going into the final frames. Frank taking the second game 227-203 to level the match. Charlie taking the match 2-0 214-204.
Game two for the Girls and Chloe staying pace with the Finn and just 9 pins down in the sixth frame, Avan with a four pin lead in the fifth frame against Norway. Chloe battling hard to stay in the master shooting a turkey but Palermaa hitting a fourbagger then five and six to shut her out 240-196. Avan in a lower scoring second game leveled the match as Norway opened twice at the end for 160-145.
Frank in the final match decider down in the fifth and sixth but hitting a double to catch the Dane who despite an open also had a fourbagger. An open in the eighth for Frank made things difficult but he bounced back with a strike but the Dane doubled in the tenth for the win 227-191. Avan and Madelen both opening in frame one of the third game but almost level through frame three with spares but Norway opening again in the fourth and Avan ahead. All level again not much later as Avan split opened and Norway doubled to take a lead. That turned on its head yet again as Norway split opened in the seventh and Avan struck then doubled as Norway opened again in the eighth. Avan with a turkey and going through despite a split open in the tenth for 175-160 and 2-1 win.
Quarterfinals
Avan Rhodes up against Ema Iwazawa from the Czech Republic and Charlie Upton vs Sebastian Holm Holst from Denmark. Sebastian losing in the Singles final to Frank Stephenson but then sending Frank out of the Masters. Could this be a chance for Charlie to give some payback? Avan fought like a champion in the previous round and a tough match against the talented Czech.
Charlie starting well with a double but then opened as the Dane spared, struck and opened in the first three frames. Avan with and open and two spares but the Czech starting with a double spare and strike. A lead of eight pins for Charlie as both athletes then doubled to the fifth frame. A split open in the sixth for Denmark with Charlie sparing and chance to extend a lead. The Dane was back with a double after the open and Charlie sparing in the eighth frame and important strike in the ninth but the run stopped for Denmark with a spare and Charlie with an eleven pin lead. Charlie doubles for 211 to go one up with the Dane on 201. A slow paced girls game yet to finish and Avan behind after six frame but an open from Iwazawa in the eighth still gave room to catch and just 20 pins down. The boys racing ahead in game 2 and Charlie edging it with a double spare and strike to the Dane’s double and two spares. So if anyone can run the strikes it’s Charlie and the double went to a turkey but an eight pin stopped the run and Dane not striking so not catching and hit a split in the sixth to fall further behind. The girls first game just finishing and Avan with 154 to the Czech’s 189 and one down. Charlie now only spares for three frame and the Dane hits a double to worry the England fans watching but still a 14 pin lead with the tenth frame to go. Disaster as a split for Charlie and 201 finish as the dane strikes and ties a 201. A one ball roll off and eight count for Denmark and Chrlie throws it through the nose for nine and advances 2-0. Game two for the girls and Avan flying this time with a turkey open and then a fourbagger and the Czech girl nowhere to go and having two opens in the first five frames. An open in the ninth for Avan but no worries, the match all levelled at 1-1 and 222-152.
Game three and an early lead for Avan after a spare and double as Iwazawa spared and opened. The lead extending with a double then a turkey but the Czech also back with two strikes. Avan playing with confidence now added another for a fourbagger and grinding down her opponent just like the previous round. The Czech faltering with a spare in the fifth frame. This was all Avan now, five in a row and making it look easy then a high hit spare in the seventh. Ema Iwazawa not giving up though with a double but quite a few behind Avan now. Into the ninth frame and a six split and open for Avan but safe after a strike in the tenth and this game was won. Avan advancing the quarter finals 2-1 and 225-224.

Avan with a six spare in the sixth and Avan five pins down. Charlie back on strike in the ninth and the Italian sparing but a split for Chalie in the tenth and this one was indeed going to a decider. 169-245 (1-1). Charlie still closed in the fourth after another spare but Giantomassi hitting a fourbagger and pulling away. A double for Greece and baby split open for Avan separated the pair after three. Both sparing in the fourth and the Greek with a strike in the fifth as Avan also struck in the fifth frame. Giannadaki looked better fired a double and Avan happy to match it. A big chance as the greekk washed out and opened and Avan seized her chance with a turkey. Avan then light in the pocket for a seven count but the Greek high for an eight count but Avan opening and the Greek sparing and this game was slipping away. Then a ray of light as the Greek split opened and Avan sparing and all level again if she could strike in the tenth. The tall greek girl up first and striking and Avan match her. This was anyones now and strikes to claim it, the Greek hit a double as Avan left a single pin and we were going to a final game 189-179 (1-1).
