Home Nations and Iceland

Reports

England on home soil is a great advantage but as always our team will be made to work for any medals at the Senior Triple Crown. We have a fantastic record at all levels over the years but Home Nations athletes are much improved as history progesses and Iceland a new threat to contend with. Confidence will be high, especially in teams stacked with World Championships medalists.

Singles

First up on Friday were the Men for the four game race to a singles medal. Ireland making the early running with Paul Stott on 234 tied with team mate Kieran Shortt. England’s Lol Ellis with 211 and only one of five rolling over 200 in game 1. The same in game two and only five 200 plus games showing this to be a tougher condition than maybe most expected. By game three Iceland were on top with Freyr Bragason leading from England’s Kim Johnson in second and Scotland’s Frank Lindsay third with a game to go. One or two changes at the very end as Iceland held on for the Gold medal with England’s Ian Hollands up into Silver and Scotland’s Bernie Matthews taking the Bronze medal.

Friday afternoon saw the womens singles and England the early leaders as Sally Wilson and Marsha Dalley were the only two with a 200 plus game after two games with Ireland’s Theresa Watts in third. It was all change at the end as a 151 dropped Sally Wiilson to the Bronze position with Iceland’s Gugny Gunnarsdottir in Silver and taking the Gold was Ireland’s Theresa Watts.

Doubles

If the Singles saw only a few 200 games the Doubles made up for it and a sea of red on the scores sheet covering what was black before. Going well and taking the Gold were England’s Gordon Humphries and Ian Hollands with 1662 as Iceland’s Gudmundur Sigurdsson and Freyr Bragason took Silver with 1636 and Wales Robert Bruce and Steve Williams taking the Bronze with 1607.

Saturday and time for the women to complete the four game doubles. Iceland’s Gudny Gunnarsdottir and Linda Hronn Magnusdottir lead from the very first game to claim Gold with 1532 and some way ahead of Ireland’s Lorraine Keane and Theresa Watts with 1456 and taking Bronze were the Welsh pair of Julie Johansson and Lynne Walker with 1449.
