“A great weekend of bowling!..” from BTBA Chair Geoff Brown

“..it was a great weekend of bowling!” writes our BTBA Chairman, Geoff Brown as he memos from the 2024 BTBA Annual Awards and the 2024 Senior Inter County Championships finals.

“I must start by saying that I don’t think I have ever had such an enjoyable weekend as a spectator. I watched a lot of bowling, talked to a lot of old friends and got to present the medals and trophies to the winners of the 2024 Senior Inter County Championships Finals, at GOBowling Dunstable.

“It was a pleasure to watch some outstanding high quality bowling from start to finish. A special mention must go to Andy Preece for his 300 and to the high average performances from both Steven Flynn 233 and Steve Thornton 232.  For the ladies, Gaye McCully shot 269 and averaged 215 while Kim Oakley averaged 205.

“Scoring was high throughout with Norfolk & Suffolk Ladies hitting a 780 team game and going on to win the ladies title and for the men, Dorset hitting a fantastic 1200 team game and going on to win the men’s title.  I must congratulate all the teams for contributing to a brilliant weekend of highly competitive, but also extremely sporting competition.

On to the banquet and awards ceremony…

“It was a honour for me to be able to present the Senior male and female bowler of the year awards to two of our finest. Sandra Simmonds and Steve Thornton are two of my very favourite bowlers and were both well overdue the top individual award that the BTBA can bestow.

“The Official of the year award went to Mr Paul Loberman. It’s difficult to put into words the amount of work that Paul does, most of which goes unseen.  Having said that, it was a pleasure to be able to thank him in some small way for all his efforts.

“The team of the year was very personal to me, having been part of the squad that traveled to Colombia and brought home both the Super Senior Ladies and Men’s team gold Medals.

Finally I, as Chairman, made 2 special awards for 2 outstanding performances at the Senior World Championships. Both Angie Brown and Lol Ellis won 2 Gold medals in a World Championships. This was the first time that any England bowler has ever won 2 Gold medals at a Worlds in our 63 year history.  An achievement that could not go unrewarded.

“In all a brilliant weekend which showcased the depth of talent in our senior ranks.  I look forward to attending the Adult Inter County Championships Finals in November and hope to be treated to another great weekend of bowling.”
