When Ten-Pin Bowling meets Tennis

Sunday 4th August, Go Bowling, Dunstable

Sanction: Pending

The purpose of this tournament is to adopt a tennis draw and seeding approach to the Summer Matchplay Tournament.

In Tennis, the top 8 players are typically seeded into a tournament based on their rankings (plus a few other criteria that the Tournament manager can adjust) then the rest are drawn at random into the remaining places. Tennis matches are knockout right from the first round.

Tenpin Bowling tournaments typically have a qualifying round of 6 games or more and then bowlers are ranked by score into the next rounds of any format thereafter for the tournament.

This tournament will take those methods and apply them thus:

  1. There will be two combined gender divisions:
    1. U150 average with a 40% of 150 handicap applied.
    1. 151+ average with a 20% of the highest entering average handicap applied.
  2. At entry the bowlers will be put into 1 of 4 groups (A, B, C, D) per division.
    1. The Top 8 highest entry averages will be arranged as follows:
      1. Group A: Avg1, Avg6
      1. Group B: Avg4, Avg5
      1. Group C: Avg3, Avg7
      1. Group D: Avg2, Avg8
  3. The remaining entries will be chosen at random and put into one of the 4 groups.

Each group will then follow the format below:

  4. ROUND 1: Everyone will bowl 6. Points will be awarded per game based on h/cap score within each group, starting at 10 descending by 1.
    1. The top 4 bowlers on points in each group will go through to Round 2
  5. ROUND 2: The 4 bowlers, in each group, will be seeded based on points: 1v4 and 2v3 and bowl 1 game match play. The 2 winners will onto the Quarter Finals.
  6. ROUND 3: Quarter Finals 1 game match play. The Winners will the move onto the Semi Finals
  7. ROUND 4: Semi-Finals 1 game match play. Winner of Group A will play Winner of Group B. Winner of Group C will play Winner of Group D.
  8. ROUND 5: Final The 2 Winners from Round 4 will play 1 game match play to determine overall champion.
  9. As is often seen in Tennis, being a top seed doesn’t guarantee a place in the finals, anything can happen and usually does.
  10. Registration 08:30 Roll-off 9am
  11. YBE Bowler and YBC Tour points will be awarded according to the YBE Endeavour Tour Ranking System, taken from the scratch score of the 6 games from ROUND 1. Maximum points available: 76 per YBE Endeavour Tour Age division.
