Reports

We all remember last time, 2023 and Team England achieved a total of 12 medals (four gold, two silver, and six bronze) at the 2023 IBF World Senior Championships held in Cali, Colombia. We were just one medal behind the USA and it’s a big ask to go to the USA and match them in their own back yard. We have the Athletes to do it with medalists Angie Brown, Diane Johnson, Ian Holland’s, Lol Ellis, Lynn Squibb back and a host of talented seniors joining them including a UK Tenpin Hall of Famer in Kim Oakley and European Silver medalist partner Gaye McCully among others. We have medals in us, it’s just which ones?

Masters Day 2

Grand Senior Quarter Finals

No easy matches now but all three of our athletes winning the first game. Angie in a close one 175-160, Gary winning 204-179 and Kim flying with 245-158. Game two and Angie behind after six frame thanks to a split open. Kim was steaming with front six and Gary struggling with splits and behind.

An open from the Aussie in the ninth and 169-173 loss or Angie and all level in the match . Kim through 2-0 smashing in 268-196 and going home with a medal but Gary all level after loosing 173-192.

Game three and looking good for Angie as the Australian hit four split opens in a row as Angie stayed clean through six frames. All level after three frames in the England vs Venezuela match. Another split for Robyn Flynn and Angie could walk this one home. An open for Arturo and Gary hitting clean through four. Angie through 2-1 and 184-128 and going home with another medal. A nightmare split in the sixth for Gary with Arturo hitting a double and our man in trouble. Digging deep, Gary back with a strike but Arturo now on a fourbagger and this one looking over. Despite a turkey in the tenth for Gary Arturo hit 226 to Gary’s 195 and a 1-2 loss.

Two in the semi finals but sadly lose one.

Grand Senior Semi Finals

Angie Brown vs Pepita Jacques (France) and Kim Johnson vs David Farquharson (Australia) in the semi finals, would it be bronze or more. Angie starting well with a strike spare turkey and in front. Kim behind to an Aussie Turkey and spare. Angie with a 34 pin lead in the sixth but Kim down by 44 but hitting a double as the Aussie opened. Kim adding another for a turkey and well back in the match. Angie going well and could smell a final place already and a good lead over Pepita. Angie 1-0 up 227-158. Kim smashing a five bagger to take the first game 215-207.

Game two and Kim off to a good start with a double but then a split open but the Aussie opened also an Kim leading. Kim just a pin down over four. A split open in the sixth for Angie and work to do to end this in two. Kim with the same thoughts as he fired in a turkey to open up a lead over the Australian. Angie back on strike and open from France and a chance but another split frustrating things. Ten pins up over eight frames for Angie and Kim 30 pins up after seven frames. Angie in for the kill with a Strike in the ninth but matched by Pepita. Angie at the end with 159 after an open in the tenth and Pepita with 170 to level the match. Kim through in a 2-0 win with second game of 219-189.

Game 3 starting well for Angie with strike spare strike spare but an open in the fourth as Pepita spared then opened then split in the sixth. Angie with a 20 plus pin lead. Time to strike and Peptita did so as Angie could only spare. Cheers as Angie struck in the eighth and the French woman spared. A double here in the ninth would just about end it but we would have to wait with an eight spare as Pepita struck. This could still go either way in the tenth if France could double. Seven split for Pepita and Angie was into the final 179-159 and 2-1.

Grand Senior Final

Men

Wow, two in the final and one in each of the Men’s and Ladies. Angie Brown vs Maria Ruiz (Mexico) and Kim Johnson vs Arturo Hernandez (Venezuela).

First up the Men and Kim opening with a double then a split as Arturo spared twice then opened. A spare next as Arturo washed out and opened. Kim wanting a gold here but maybe also wanting to avenge his friend Gary who Arturo took out in the Quarterfinals. A baby split in the fifth for Kim and open frame, the Venezuelan sparing a nine. Open in the sixth for Kim as Venezuela spared. Pretty much all level this one still be it low scoring. Arturo striking in the seventh as Kim spared. The Venezuelan then hitting a double and Kim still unable to find a strike and nine spare. Arturo with a Turkey. A few calming words and advice from Verity Crawley and Kim with nine spare again.

We can speculate on that advice, maybe it was let this one go and find your shot for the next game. Arturo with four in a row and Kim was 1-0 down.

Game two and both striking to start us off and Arturo then hitting a double. The Venezuelan was flying now and had a crowd also cheering him. Kim was back though striking and double up. An open in the third for Kim and spare from Arturo. A split and Open for the Venezuelan in the fourth frame as Kim spared and a slight lead now. Strikes still not coming for Kim in and another split from Arturo gave our man a big opening. Although not striking, neither was Arturo and kinda looked lost at this point. Kim just needing to stay clean and maybe catch a strike or two. Say no more, two came back to back and looking odds on now to level the match. A six split for Arturo and this gave was over. 1-1′ Kim suddenly free and hitting a fourbagger then five and ending with 234-138.

Game three and Kim striking and bowing to the crowd, Venezuela striking and all level after two frames and still level after four. Arturo then shooting a double as Kim spared and behind after five frames. Turkey for Venezuela and now was the time for Kim’s striking shoes and did so in the sixth. Four in a row for Venezuela and Kim hitting nine spare and looking a little like Silver this time round. Arturo’s run of strikes ending with nine spare and kim drilling the pocket only to see a stone seven pin. Thirty pins down going into the ninth. Off the sheet for Gold we want to write here and Arturo hitting a six count after a spare, this was still doable. Nine again and again the seven pin and Silver it was. the game ending 193-222 and 1-2. Still every cloud quite literally in this case has a Silver lining.

Ladies

Angie vs Maria Ruiz from Mexico and a good start all closed for Angie on 96 in the fifth. The Mexican with an open in the fourth frame. A split in the sevth for Angie and the match was all level. Angie striking in the eighth as Maria could only spare. Angie 3 pins up in the eighth but the Mexican on strike. A six in the tenth for Maria and Angie just needing nine spare but disaster and a split open but no fear the Mexican opened and Angie spared for 191-169 and 1-0 up.

The second game started with a Turkey from Mexico and on a 278 pace over five frame, Angie spare strike and three spares in reply. Mexico with a 20 pin lead going into the ninth and Angie sparing and Maria ending with 209 to Angie’s 188 and the match was one each.

Final game and twelve shots from Gold or Silver. Angie with a double and Maria and spare then an open frame. Nine spare from Angie in the third and the Mexican seven spare. A bad news split in the fifth for Angie and open then a spare and still just ahead over six frames. Neither were finding the strikes and Angie with a 16 pin lead into the eighth. Maria then find a strike in the eighth and Angie matching her. The Mexican failing to double and Angie also leaving a spare but still same pins ahead going into the tenth frame. Stay clean for Gold. She did and 187-170 2-1 and Gold medal
