Victory for Yorkshire and Kent in Senior Inter Counties 2018

It was victory for Yorkshire Men and Kent Women in the Senior Inter Counties Final 2018, held at MFA Nottingham this weekend, reports Paul Le Manquais, BTBA Senior ICC Secretary.

Kent ladies won all but one of their seven games losing that in game four to last year’s champions Dorset. They were top of the table after game two from where they held a comfortable margin over Dorset who finished with a silver medal. The bronze medal was won by Staffordshire holding off Warwickshire’s challenge. Ladies high average was won by Dorset’s Angie Brown with 186 and the game of 224 by Sussex ‘s Despina Gough.

Wining all games in a round robin final is rare. Yorkshire managed this despite some early low scoring by their standards. They only topped the table though after game four from where their lead progressively increased. The other medal positions became a three-way fight in the last game. Kent who were second by 190 pins were playing third placed Lincolnshire with Warwickshire snapping at their heels trailing by 60 pins.   Lincolnshire beat Kent but not by enough missing the silver medal by 22 pins.  Warwickshire won too and made up the 60 pins exactly meaning a tie for the bronze. This was a first to anybody’s knowledge. As the County rules only legislate for a first place the decision was that no play off was required and the bronze medal would be shared. The men’s high average was Allan Keddie from Berkshire with 209 and the high game of 268 by Middlesex’s Robert Bruce.

Many congratulations to both worthy champions, Kent and Yorkshire.

We would like to thank Paul for organising this year’s event and MFA Nottingham for hosting.
