The next stop on the BTBA Tour for Seniors took place at the excellent Barnsley Bowl, always a pleasure to be there, friendly helpful staff and probably the best bowl food in the country.

40 bowlers ( 31 men and 9 ladies) took to the lanes. After the mix up over the wrong oil pattern last year and the difficulty in scoring, this year saw a more friendly pattern and so it proved to be with lots of  high scores from both men and ladies. The format being a 50% cut of bowlers to round 2 (15 men and 5 ladies ).

The morning squad saw 12 men and 1 ladies start the tournament, initially the scoring was low, but soon the big games appeared, highlights being Al Bennett 265 in game 2, defending champ Frank (funtime) Lindsay 279 and 258, Steve Coates 249 and 258  Gary Barlow 236,234,249, Al Turner 225,245,234. Leading after the 1st squad Frank 1385  from Gary 1376 , Steve 1370  and AL 1363 just ahead of Ken Wray 1358, surprise was seeing Mr Yorkshire Ron Oldfield down in 6th 1297, just not being able to carry the pins.

The only lady in this squad Shirley Norton joined in with the men with 256 in game 4 and a solid 1269 with age bonus. Bowlers in the 2nd squad arrived just as the torrential rain arrived, who says seniors can’t run. This squad saw the remaining 19 men and 8 ladies took to the lanes and the scoring was ramped up even higher, I will try and relate all the big scores but there is so many apologies if I miss someone out. Yorkshire stalwart Al Jenkins started the scorefest with 269, Keith Hodge 259.

The 2nd game saw fireworks as 2 bowlers started stringing the strikes together Trevor Green and Jan Hodge 4 lanes apart both started with 10 strikes, who would get the next strike, unfortunately Jan’s run stopped at 10 and saw her with a 287, Trevor struck the 11th, and the bowl hushed to see if a perfect game was to be seen, it wasn’t to be as the ball cam a bit high in the pocket and left a 4 pin so 299, this scoring seemed to spur lots of bowlers as even more massive games followed, next game saw Alan Keddie follow up a 279 with 278 for an opening 801, Stephen Bose joined in with his own 279.

Game 4 saw no let up as Mick Ince 266, Mark Fullbrook 264, Ian Buckland 258 sandwiched between 2 247 games and Lol Ellis following up 268 in game 2 with 255. With the lanes drying out a little the scoring slowed to just 240’s and 230’s, afraid too many to mention. The first round ended with Lol Ellis topping the leaderboard with 1511, Alan Keddie 1455, Ian Buckland 1450, Nev Robinson 1446 then a big gap to Morning Leader Frank Lindsay 1385. The cut for 15 ended in a tie on 1296 between Ken Burton and Keith Hodge, with Ken going through with the highest scratch last game, with a further 4 bowlers missing out by less than 10 pins, Al Bennett, Alan Wills, Mo Singleton and John Lawless.

The Ladies 1st Round saw big games from Jan Hodge 287, Angie Brown 257, Nicky Prout 254. Nicky just missing the top 5 by 3 pins on 1183.  Round 2 saw the 15 men and 5 ladies play another 4 games and once again a 50% cut for round 3 ( 8 men and 2 ladies ).

From the start Angie 245 in game 1 and Jan 238 in game 2 taking themselves clear of the field, Wendy Fullbrook with 222 last game tried valiantly to close the gap but to no avail. The men’s fight for the top 8 was equally as intense, Steve Coates starting with 275 Ian Buckland 258 and Frank Lindsay 252 making a strong bid for the final round. Once again the bowl was treated to a bowler shooting for a perfect game this time it was 1st round leader Lol Ellis, could he succeed where Trevor failed the answer was no, as after getting the first 11 strikes the twelfth shot was just a touch inside and although hitting the pocket well it left a solid 9 pin. At this point I congratulated Lol who told me he has been stuck on 13 perfect games and was hoping to get off unlucky 13, I said dont’ worry you have 6 more chances.

Nev Robinson moved up a place into 3rd with 254 and 258, Ian secured 2nd spot after round 2 with 279 last game. When the dust had settled the cut fell at 2262, special mention to Ken Burton who starting in 15th clawed his way up to 6th with games of 268,226 and 246. Still leading at this point was Lol after shooting 1063 for the 4 games Ian 1003 and Nev 999 had opened up a healthy gap from Frank 968 but with so many big games would they hold on to their places.

The final Round was again 4 games and the guarantee that all bowlers knew they had cashed for making it this far. In the ladies section Angie Brown made a big bid for the title with 245 first game even though bowling 157 in the last game Jan was unable to close the gap and had to settle for 2nd. In the mens could anyone catch Lol, well a below par 215 gave the others some hope and Nev closed the gap slightly with 247, could he get any closer and the answer was an emphatic no as Lol posted 268 in game 2 to all but clinch the title, then cruised to 237 in game 3 to seal it, strong finishes from Gary Barlow 268 and 247 and Ian Buckand 268 last game was not enough for Ian to catch Nev who shot 229 to hold him off.

With the title won a relaxed Lol started with strike after strike and when the 11th went in we wondered would he do it this time or would we see our 3rd disappointment of the day, the 12th ball went down it looked good would it strike, YES it would and the congratulations and applause rang out, a perfect last game and The 13 perfects monkey off his back, at this point I was feeling a little satisfied after my earlier comment after his 299, psychic or what?.

So that was it and the worthy winners were introduced and posed for photographs. Angie Brown and Lol Ellis champions for this year. Lo had managed to average 247 scratch for his 14 games, a commanding show of bowling. My Congratulations to Angie and Lol on their victories.

From a personal view it was wonderful to watch so many people bowling big scores. As ever my thanks to Helen and David and all the staff at Barnsley bowl who without their help things ran so smoothly we finished an hour ahead of time. Thanks also to Les and Wendy Grant for their help with getting the scores out so quickly. I hope all the bowlers enjoyed themselves despite the awful weather outside. Here’s to next year and hopefully more people will come to enjoy the delights of Barnsley Bowl and a friendly Yorkshire welcome.
