The 2016 Yorkshire Senior Doubles was bowled at Mansfield Superbowl on Sunday, 22nd May.  Alan Turner has written this report:

"The Mansfield SuperBowl had an extensive refurbishment during 2015 making it one of the most attractive centres in the country.

The lanes are well cared for. The centre is clean. The snack bar offered us a choice of meals for lunch at £5 each and the staff were all attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

There were 2 qualifying squads. The morning.squad had 11 entries and the afternoon squad 14 entries.  During the qualifying round the scores were average to good with 26 bowlers scoring over par.

Tournament Manager, Alan Bennett and Les Grant were 1st squad joint leaders on 2691 with Ron Deacon and Jack Smith.
Scoring in squad 2 was similar with 3 teams moving in front of the 1st squad leaders. They were Mo Singleton/Frosty Halliwell 2730 ~ Mike Bergquist/Jeff Taylor 2719 and Ron Oldfield/Nev Robinson 2718.

The cut for the top 14 teams fell at 2563. Unfortunately the 13th placed team of Ken Burton/Suran Johansen decided to make the long journey home at 1pm before the 2nd squad started and missed out. This in turn let in 15th placed Martin Green/ Mike Stephenson on 2548.

The 2 unlucky teams were myself, Alan Turner with Eddie Rowe 2542 and Keith Hodge/ Barry Walker 2536.
The top Individual scratch scores for the BTBA Senior Tour ranking points were Cliff Dew 1351~~ Mark Loughborough 1341 ~~ Lol Ellis 1329 ~~ Mike Halliwell 1328 ~~ Jeff Taylor 1324 1324 and Ian Buckland 1311. The 3 leading ladies were Catherine Wills 1126 ~~ Angie Brown 1122 and Jan Hodge 1096.

Moving on to Round 1. All scores were cancelled and the top 14 teams played just the one game with the lowest 6 teams being eliminated.

4 hours was a long time to wait to play for the teams who qualified from squad one if they were not in the top 8 teams in this round
The unlucky team in 9th place were the 2014 champions Les Grant and tournament manager Alan Bennett who had the same score as Martin Green/Mike Stephenson who for the second time were the cut. This time because of a higher scratch game.
Also leaving at this stage were Mike Berquist/.JeffTaylor ~~ Frank & Ruth Stander ~~ Frank LindsayKen Wray ~~ Mo Singleton/Frosty Halliwell and MarkFullbrook/Dave Rawding.

Round 2 ~~ The last eight teams then went into two game Knockout phase. There was a lane change after game one. The highest scoring match was a close affair between Ron & Nev versus Cliff & Carnage. ~~ 920 - 912. Unfortunately Steve hadn't read the format and assumed the top 4 teams would go through. He didn't realise they were playing head to head and were knocked out by 8 pins. On a 50% elimination basis they would have cruised through in second place. That was bad luck but.you can only play to the rules.

Round 3 ~~ the first semi final was Ron Oldfield & Nev Robinson versus Alan Jenkins & Gary Barlow. This was like a local derby as these guys have been team mates for over 40 years and the four of them had played the 1st Senior Nationals together at Nuneaton in February. ~~ Alan & Gary ran out the winners.

The second semi final was won by Angie Brown & Ian Buckland who played one of the Lancashire teams, Steve Coates & Bob Heaton.

So onto Round 4 ~ the final with Alan Jenkins finding the form that had won him 24 Senior Singles titles suddenly springing into action and helping Gary, who had bowled consistently well all day beat Angie & Ian in a high scoring final.

So once again a Yorkshire team won the Yorkshire doubles tournament even if it was played in Nottinghamshire.

Alan Turner"
